Harvey Weinstein a former Hollywood Producer, was recently sentenced to 23 years for rape and sexual assault. He has tested positive to coronavirus whilst in prison. Harvey is proof that no one is safe from this virus.
The news came from Michael Powers who is the president of the state’s correctional officers and Police Benevolent Association. Powers said that the 68-year-old has been placed in isolation at Wende correctional service to avoid infecting others.
After the results came back, Weinstein was not the only one to be isolated. According to Powers, the concern was on the correctional officers as they lack the proper equipment to protect them.
Before going to Wende maximum prison, Weinstein was at New York City’s Rikers Island jail where he is suspected to have contracted the virus. Harvey was recently sentenced to 23 years in prison for sexually assaulting and raping women.
He was accused of assaulting over 80 women including Miriam Haley a former, production assistant.

Upon hearing the news of Weinstein testing positive to COVID-19, different people stormed the social media expressing how glad they are that the man has the virus. There are a lot of messages and celebratory memes. Some said that it was karma hunting him down, whilst some wished the virus kills him. Some even went on to call Weinstein a serial abuser.
The Situation At Rikers Island Prison
Although it is not yet confirmed, it is suspected that Weinstein got the virus when he was still at the Rikers Island Jail. This is where he was whilst waiting for transfer to New York City.
In Rikers there are at least 29 imprisoned people, as well as 17 staff, were infected. So far in the US, there are hundreds of people that have already been granted early release as well as compassionate release from jails. This is a response to the spread of the virus.
The country has recognized that this virus will explode among those in prison and those imprisoned will be in great danger. So far 23 older prisoners have been released. This was announced by Bill de Blasio, New York Mayor.
It doesn’t end there, the situation in prison has to be taken seriously to avoid the spread and deaths. Due to that, the body of the New York City Board of Correction has demanded that 2,000 prisoners should be released.
They talked of the elderly, those with health conditions like heart diseases, those who are serving 1-year sentences, those who have missed curfews and other minor parole violations.
The US is one of the most affected countries in the world. So far it has 46, 290 cases and over 528 deaths. This number is across all states in the US. the number is likely to go higher as new cases are rising from time to time.
Australia has recorded about 4,517 cases as well as 25 deaths.
